Cold, Calm and Recharged.
Cryotherapy for Everyday Wellbeing.
Whole Body Cryotherapy is often associated with athletes, intense training and physical recovery. But you do not need to be preparing for a competition to benefit from making time to reset.
A few minutes in the cryotherapy chamber can provide an invigorating break from a busy day, leaving many people feeling refreshed, alert and energised. At The Cold Room, cryotherapy is also used by people looking to support their wider wellbeing, manage everyday fatigue and create a regular ritual that helps them feel at their best.
What is Whole Body Cryotherapy?
Whole Body Cryotherapy involves briefly exposing the body to extremely cold, dry air in a specially designed chamber.
At The Cold Room, you step inside our advanced MECOTEC two-person chamber, the first of its kind in Wales. The chamber operates at around −85°C, with sessions typically lasting between three and five minutes depending on your experience and treatment programme.
Unlike an ice bath, there is no cold water and no prolonged immersion. The air is dry, the experience is carefully supervised and the session is over within minutes.
Why can cryotherapy feel so invigorating?
Extreme cold provides the body with a short, controlled stimulus. Blood vessels near the skin temporarily narrow as the body works to protect its core temperature, while the nervous system responds rapidly to the cold environment.
Research has found that repeated whole-body cold exposure can cause a substantial temporary increase in noradrenaline, a neurotransmitter associated with alertness and the body’s response to stress. The evidence around endorphins is less consistent, so it would be too strong to claim that every session creates a measurable endorphin surge. However, many people report a noticeable lift in mood, energy and mental clarity after leaving the chamber.
The contrast is part of the experience. A few intense minutes of cold are followed by the feeling of warmth returning to the body, often accompanied by a sense of accomplishment and renewed energy. At The Cold Room this contrast can be enhanced by combining cryotherapy with our Infrared Saunas in our Contrast Therapy package.
A natural break from a busy mind
Modern life does not always provide many opportunities to be fully present. Emails, deadlines, travel, training and family commitments can keep the mind constantly occupied.
Cryotherapy demands your attention for a few minutes. The cold is immediate, leaving little room to think about anything else. For some people, that makes the session feel like a mental reset as much as a physical treatment.
Early research suggests that courses of Whole Body Cryotherapy may have potential benefits for mood, anxiety and wider quality of life. However, the studies remain relatively small and cryotherapy should not be presented as a treatment for depression, anxiety or another mental health condition.
It is better understood as a complementary wellbeing experience that may help you feel more awake, refreshed and ready to return to your day.
Could cryotherapy support better sleep?
Sleep is central to wellbeing, influencing energy, mood, concentration and physical recovery.
Some studies have reported improvements in perceived sleep quality after Whole Body Cryotherapy, including research involving people using it after evening exercise. The findings are promising, but the evidence is not yet strong enough to guarantee that cryotherapy will improve sleep for everyone.
Many clients nevertheless find that combining cryotherapy with sensible evening habits, regular exercise and adequate recovery helps them create a more complete wellbeing routine.
Cryotherapy should complement, rather than replace, the fundamentals of good sleep, including a consistent routine, reduced late-night stimulation and a comfortable sleep environment.
Supporting comfort and everyday movement
Feeling physically comfortable can have a significant effect on overall wellbeing.
Whole Body Cryotherapy is widely used by active people seeking help with post-exercise soreness and subjective recovery. Reviews suggest that it may reduce perceptions of soreness and help some people feel better recovered, although improvements in physical performance are less consistent.
That can also matter outside competitive sport. Cryotherapy may appeal to people who:
Spend long days sitting behind a desk
Feel stiff after travelling
Train recreationally
Have a physically demanding job
Want to feel fresher after a busy week
Enjoy treatments that are energising rather than purely relaxing
Feeling less tired or uncomfortable can make it easier to remain active, and regular movement remains one of the most important foundations of long-term wellbeing.
Can one session make a difference?
Many people notice an immediate change in how they feel after their first session. Commonly reported sensations include feeling:
More awake
Energised
Mentally refreshed
Lighter
Calm but alert
Ready to take on the rest of the day
These are subjective experiences and everyone responds differently.
A single cryotherapy session can provide an enjoyable boost, while regular treatments may help turn it into a consistent part of your wellbeing routine. Research into mood, sleep and other longer-term outcomes has generally examined repeated sessions rather than one isolated treatment.
Making cryotherapy part of your routine
There is no single schedule that suits everyone. Some people visit occasionally when they need a reset, while others include cryotherapy in their weekly routine.
You might choose a session:
At the end of a demanding working week
After travelling
Following a difficult training session
Before a busy day when you want to feel alert
As part of a wider recovery programme
Whenever you want a brief, energising change of state
The most suitable frequency will depend on your goals, health and response to treatment. The team at The Cold Room can help you choose an appropriate approach.
Combine cold with deeper relaxation
Cryotherapy works particularly well as part of a wider wellbeing experience.
Our Contrast Therapy experience combines Whole Body Cryotherapy with the warmth of the Infrared Sauna. The rapid transition from energising cold to relaxing heat creates a distinctive treatment that can leave you feeling both refreshed and deeply settled.
For a recovery-focused experience, Recovery Reset combines cryotherapy with Body Ballancer compression therapy. This pairs the invigorating effects of the chamber with a rhythmic, relaxing lower-body massage.
Is Whole Body Cryotherapy safe?
Whole Body Cryotherapy exposes the body to extreme cold, so appropriate screening, protective clothing and professional supervision are essential.
At The Cold Room, sessions take place in a purpose-built MECOTEC chamber and are supervised by trained staff. You will be given protective items for your hands, feet, ears and airways, and the treatment will be tailored to your experience.
Cryotherapy is not suitable for everyone. Certain cardiovascular, circulatory, neurological and respiratory conditions may prevent treatment, and it should not be used during pregnancy. Extreme cold can cause injury when equipment is misused or exposure is inappropriate, which is why screening and close supervision matter.
Please tell the team about any health conditions, medication or recent changes in your wellbeing before your session.
A few minutes for yourself
Wellbeing does not always require an hour-long treatment or a complete change of lifestyle.
Sometimes it begins with stepping away from your routine and doing something that makes you feel unmistakably awake, present and alive.
Whole Body Cryotherapy provides a short, powerful experience that can help you pause, reset and return to your day feeling recharged.
